With so many years in the hair industry, Janine learned what clients need, what a good business requires, and what it takes to keep showing up when the circumstances aren’t ideal. Janine Wood has learned all of it;through two businesses, two economic crises, and forty years of never once considering a different career.

“Everyone Needs a Haircut”

It all started with Oak Street Hair Studio. In 2008, right as the recession hit, Janine decided to open her first salon. Her landlord was skeptical, and he told her he didn’t think it would work out. 

Her response was immediate: “Everyone needs a haircut. People will cut things out of their routines, but not a haircut.” 

She opened it anyway. And she was right. 

Janine ran Oak Street Hair Studio for ten years; building her clientele, earning her reputation, and growing a business that became a fixture in her community. When her lease neared its end, she faced a choice: find another rental and start the cycle again or bet on herself in a bigger way. 

Janine and her husband bought their own real estate and gutted a garage. When it was done, she closed Oak Street and opened the studio she’d always envisioned and named it exactly what it was. 

In 2019, Garage Hair Studio was born. 

Months later, COVID-19 hit, making it the second time Janine had opened a business straight into an economic crisis. The answer was the same as it had been in 2008: keep going.

Not a dream. A vision. There’s a difference, and Janine has now spent over 18 years proving it.

The Currency of Staying Power 

Longevity in this industry is earned, not assumed. Janine has it, and she knows what it’s worth. 

“The longevity and relationships,” she says, when asked what the last 40 years have given her. “Having a business for 18 years and counting means seeing families grow and being a consistent part of my clients lives while doing what I love.” 

This is what happens when you stay put and keep your standards up. Clients who started coming to Janine years ago are still in her chair, and now their kids are too. The trust built over decades isn’t something a newer stylist can replicate, no matter how talented they are.

Running the Business Behind the Chair 

Nobody opens a hair studio because they love scheduling software and inventory management. But those things don’t disappear just because you’d rather focus on the cut. 

Janine is direct about the tension: “The biggest challenge is balancing the ‘art’ of hair with the ‘business’ of running a studio. Staying current with trends while managing back-end logistics like inventory and scheduling.” 

It’s a problem every working stylist owner knows. The client in the chair gets your full attention, but so does everything piling up behind the scenes. The question is how you handle both without letting either slip.

She doesn’t chase trends for the sake of it, but she watches where the industry moves. A stylist who stops paying attention stops growing, and in a craft where clients come to you with real expectations, standing still isn’t neutral. It goes backward. 

What She’d Tell Someone Starting Out 

Janine keeps her advice simple, because the simple stuff is what actually holds up over time. 

“Consistency is key. Focus on mastering your craft and treating every client with the same high standard of care, regardless of how long you’ve been doing it.” 

Protecting the Time Outside the Studio 

Running a business for 18 years means Janine has also figured out how to leave it, at least temporarily. 

“Setting boundaries and utilizing tools that automate small tasks. When the business side is organized, it’s much easier to step away and recharge.” 

When the admin handles itself, the mental overhead shrinks. That’s not a luxury, for someone who’s been at this for four decades; it’s maintenance. You don’t keep doing quality work by grinding without rest. 

The Next Decade 

Garage Hair Studio is already a community staple. This is the result of 18 years of reliable work and 40 years of knowing how to do it. 

Janine isn’t looking to expand or reinvent. She’s looking to keep doing what works. 

“To continue providing top-tier service to my community and to keep the studio as a staple of reliability and quality for another decade.”
