If left unchecked, stress can progress into what the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies as an \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>occupational phenomenon<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, caused by the result of unmanaged stress in the workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent survey, evaluated in a study called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8913590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Economic Cost of Burnout in Veterinary Medicine<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, nearly 87% of veterinary professionals reported Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) scores in the moderate to high range. One of her biggest takeaways was the importance of developing an understanding of the contributing occupational and lifestyle factors. Such high levels of exposure to stress can also contribute to compassion fatigue. By becoming emotionally overextended from helping others, you may begin to experience indifference or impersonal behaviors toward patients, clients, or team members. You don\u2019t have to experience all symptoms to be in a \u2018burnout phase\u2019 \u2014 even dealing with one is consistent with burnout. If you\u2019re experiencing any of these symptoms, don\u2019t be afraid to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/resources-tools\/wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ask for help<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re all human, we are all flawed. None of us are perfect \u2014 we all make mistakes, we all struggle. Practicing stress management strategies produces a better chance of preventing burnout. During the webinar with Dr. Holowaychuk, she provided these tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.Recognize the causes and symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay attention to both the workplace and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to stress in the office, and stress you take home with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Prioritize Your Sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restorative benefits of sleep are critical to maintaining physical and mental health, so don\u2019t neglect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Maintain healthy habits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHabit stacking\u201d is a great way to build a sustainable, healthier routine. By attaching a new habit to an existing healthy habit \u2014 such as practicing gratitude while you brush your teeth \u2014 you can more effectively make it stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Practice mindfulness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highly researched and proven way to reduce stress, practicing mindfulness through yoga, meditation, or body scanning teaches us to tune into our senses and forces us to be more present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Set healthy boundaries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unhealthy boundaries can turn into bad habits if we\u2019re not careful. If you\u2019re regularly working through breaks or not taking days off, it\u2019s time to set new boundaries that protect your time, privacy, and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Know when and how to say \u2018no\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying \u2018no\u2019 can be a healthy boundary. Even if you struggle with this one, there are ways to frame your decline with phrasing such as, \u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to turn that down, but I\u2019m going to have to say \u2018no\u2019 this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Take time for self care<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t care for others if we don\u2019t take care of ourselves. An ideal way to approach this is holistically, considering all emotional, social, financial, occupational, physical, environmental, spiritual, and intellectual facets of your overall wellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Separate your work and home life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help signify to your mind and body when your work day has concluded by adding personal rituals to your routine that indicate the end of your shift. For example, clean up your desk just before you head out, or make your rounds saying goodbye to your colleagues, letting them know you\u2019re leaving your work <em>at<\/em> work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Stop aiming for perfection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let go of perfection, it\u2019s not going to happen. Maladaptive perfectionism is the setting of unrealistic goals that can burn you out. Instead, aim for \u2018good enough\u2019 and avoid comparisons to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. Show yourself compassion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vets spend so much of their day showing compassion for others, it\u2019s important to also direct that compassion inward.
