Every stylist remembers the moment they fell in love with the industry. For Jenna Morehouse<\/strong>, owner of KUSH Hair Studio<\/strong> in Davenport, Iowa, that moment came before she ever realized it was her calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went to cosmetology school before starting college,\u201d she says. \u201cI wanted to be a talk show host, lol. I figured it\u2019d be a solid job while I worked toward a degree. Something flexible, useful, and adult enough to keep me out of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once she got behind the chair, she knew she wasn\u2019t going anywhere. \u201cI loved how fast it moved, how personal it was, how satisfying it felt to make someone look sharp and feel better,\u201d she says. \u201cTurns out, it wasn\u2019t just a side job. It was meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Owning Her Space<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n

Jenna eventually decided to build something entirely her own. \u201cI opened KUSH Hair Studio because I wanted a space that reflected my standards, not someone else\u2019s branding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than ten years later, she\u2019s still thriving as a solo stylist. \u201cI\u2019m not interested in chasing trends or building a team. I\u2019m here to do excellent work, protect my peace, and serve my clients with consistency,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lessons From the Chair<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For Jenna, growth didn\u2019t happen overnight. \u201cBuilding a clientele takes years,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd just when you think you\u2019re full, you realize you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 80% of her clients being men, her schedule stays packed. \u201cSomeone else might do a few color-and-cut combos and call it a day, while I can have ten or more appointments. It\u2019s fast, focused, and stacked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The biggest turning point in Jenna\u2019s story came when she got sober. \u201cBefore that, I was surviving: showing up, doing the work, but running on fumes,\u201d she shares. \u201cOnce I got clear, everything sharpened\u2014my standards, my boundaries, my business. Nearly six years in, sobriety isn\u2019t just part of my story. It\u2019s the reason I\u2019m still standing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her honesty, both with herself and her clients, is what makes her chair such a safe and grounded space.<\/p>\n\n\n

Connection Over Perfection<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most of Jenna\u2019s clientele are men, and those relationships run deep. \u201cFor a lot of them, I\u2019m the longest female relationship they\u2019ve ever had,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve been through breakups, job changes, kids, moves\u2014you name it. There\u2019s something solid about that kind of trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not glamorous or scripted. It\u2019s real<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My clients are the reason I\u2019m still here. They showed up when I had nothing but a chair and a plan. They\u2019ve seen me through sobriety, relocation, and many more obstacles. They never flinched. That kind of loyalty isn\u2019t something you market. It\u2019s something you earn.”<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cMy clients don\u2019t come back because I\u2019m on time, because I\u2019m not,\u201d she laughs. \u201cThey don\u2019t come back because I\u2019m organized, because I\u2019m not.
